2011 NKBA Design Award: Best Of Budget-Friendly

Professional and Affordable Kitchen

Linn’s Prestige Kitchens & Baths
Destin, FL
Designer: Allison McCowan

Design Notes: A small kitchen gets a big makeover for a budget under $40,000. Selecting a 30-inch Viking range that had slight damage gave these aspiring chefs a professional-grade appliance at an affordable price. The homeowners installed the tile and sewed the banquette cushion themselves for additional cost savings. Cutting back in these areas allowed them to spend on cabinet organizers, the slate floors, LG stainless steel appliances and Corian countertops.

Products and Materials:
Schrock maple cabinetry in Dover finish, Corian countertops in Medea, Corian sink in Glacier White, Kohler faucets, Viking range and ventilation, LG dishwasher, microwave and refrigerator.

2011 NKBA Design Award: Sustainable– Best of Kitchen Views

h2 style="text-align: center;">An Energy-Saving Kitchen

Newton, MA
Designer: Jessica Williamson, AKBD

Design Notes: When this family of five moved from the city to the suburbs, they wanted to build an eco-friendly new home with an open-plan living space featuring a green kitchen. Environmentally conscientious products fill the kitchen, including LEED-certified cabinetry with a no-VOC finish and no added formaldehyde, a recycled glass backsplash, and a recycled redwood counter. A whole-house lighting system makes saving energy easier, and a PEX plumbing system allowed for the installation of a gray-water recover system. An island dining spot lets the kids snack while Mom and Dad cook on the Energy Star appliances.

Products and Materials:
GE Monogram appliances, Caesarstone quartz countertops, GreenQuest by Crystal cabinets.

With a walk-in pantry and two refrigerator/freezers, this light-filled and spacious kitchen also boasts plenty of food storage.

A Frank Lloyd Wright-Inspired Kitchen

Dream Kitchens, Inc.
Delafield, WI
Designer: Terri Schmidt
Co-Designers: Linda Eberle, CKD, CBD, and Keven Schmidt

Design Notes:
A Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home takes cues from the great architect’s use of horizontal lines and natural materials to inspire a large kitchen suitable for entertaining. Double sliding doors next to the wrap-around wet bar and built-in coffee maker conceal a walk-in pantry and associated clutter. Multiple seating areas provide plenty of options for hosting guests. Varying cabinet heights offer movement and visual interest.

Products and Materials:
Corsi custom cabinetry in mahogany, Wolf cooktop and oven, Wolf ventilation system, Sharp microwave drawer, Silver Spark granite countertops, Margaritelli iroko wood flooring, Kohler sinks and faucets, Walls and ceilings in ledgestone and mahogany, Sub-Zero refrigerator and wine refrigerator, Oceanside Glasstile glass tiles from Muse collection on vertical column.

Clean and Open Kitchen

bulthaup by Kitchen Distributors, Inc.
Denver, CO
Designer: William Landeros, CKD
Co-Designer: Jed MacKenzie, CKD

Design Notes: Clean, horizontal lines and a neutral palette give this kitchen a minimal, sleek look. A mix of materials—from stainless steel appliances to anodized aluminum cabinets, black oak flooring to a warm alder countertop bar—creates variation in neutral color schemes and texture. The horizontal theme echoes across the room from wide horizontal cabinet pulls to the cabinetry’s horizontal veneer. A 9-centimeter thick alder countertop offers a casual dining space while accenting the horizontal design.

Products and Materials:
bulthaup cabinets in grey anodized aluminum with an alder veneer, Gaggenau cooktop and oven, Sharp microwave, Sub-Zero refrigerator, bulthaup ventilation, natural quartzite countertops, Dornbracht faucet, wenge flooring in ebony, Franke sink.

A Charming Period Kitchen

Kitchens by Rose
Ramsey, NJ
Designer: Rose Marie Carr

Design Notes: A turn-of-the-century kitchen features modern standards while maintaining its original period charm. A vertical beadboard backsplash, distressed cabinetry and a hammered copper sink embody the style of the era, while the kitchen’s original Carolina pine flooring, brass spring hinges and push plates bring true authenticity to the room.

Products and Materials: Christiana painted and distressed maple and hickory cabinets and maple beadboard backsplash, honed Black Ash granite countertops, LaToscana Ducale faucet, oak and yellow North Carolina pine flooring, Bertazzoni range.
